As the Easter break has allowed many of us to re-energize in order to push through the next
seven weeks of school, I sincerely ask families to support our upcoming auction just two weeks away. As most know, we depend heavily on our auction as our main fundraiser rather than doing multiple smaller scaled ones throughout the year. Please consider attending this year’s in-person auction and buying your tickets as soon as possible. Your participation promotes our school's newly acquired mission towards a classical liberal education. This philosophy of education not only develops and increases a child’s intellect, moral, and physical capacity, but also encourages families toward a greater communal bond to ultimately transform the current culture. We desire our families to build strong, lasting relationships for years to come. So please join in the excitement, meet new families, invite friends and family, and relish in Catholic fellowship!!! CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION In 5th grade literature, students participated in several lessons revolving around a variety of classical short stories. The purpose of such stories and within any good piece of literature is to seek answers to some basic human questions. Students have learned how to question a story and be questioned by it. Some of the recent short stories read and discussed were “The Hungry Coat” by Demi,“Zlateh the Goat” by Singer, and “The Fun They Had” by Asimov. This week they will start the novel The Good Master by Seredy and will reflect and memorize the poem “In Flanders Field'' by McCrae. The insightfulness demonstrated by these 5th graders is admirable. You likely already have plans for making this upcoming week extra special
for you and your family. In case you're looking for some ideas, here is a list to help make Holy Week a time of quiet reflection upon the most important event in the history of the world: 1. Observe Palm Sunday with Fervor 2. Listen To Holy Week Music- Sacred or classical in nature 3. Read Your Way Through Holy Week -Fr. Lappe has suggested many books and podcasts over the years and perhaps this would be the week to dive into one of these sources 4. Attend The Other Services Of Holy Week- Holy Week is framed by Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, but what happens between is what makes the two Sundays make sense - please check the parish bulletin online or “upcoming dates” below for these services 5. Get to Confession- In reference to this sacrament: “It would, therefore, be foolish, as well as presumptuous, to wish arbitrarily to disregard the means of grace and salvation which the Lord has provided and, in the specific case, to claim to receive forgiveness while doing without the sacrament which was instituted by Christ precisely for forgiveness”- St. John Paul II 6. Take Part In A Mini-Fast- Consider a full or modified fast starting from the conclusion of Good Friday worship through sundown on Saturday 7. Unplug For The Week-Turn off TV, shut down the computer and cell phone as much as possible, and sign off social media 8. Host a Seder Meal - This could be as simple or elaborate as you want - modifying it to fit family needs https://denvercatholic.org/host-family-seder-meal/ 9. Our classical training nourishes the students’ natural sense of wonder and guides them to know and love what is genuinely good, true, and beautiful. Faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church, we form our students to be virtuous disciples of Jesus Christ and joyful witnesses to the Gospel. I’d like to thank Sr. Jane Dominic for sharing her great knowledge and wisdom regarding the
importance of sound, classical literature at First Friday’s Family Formation Night. Sister’s presentation completely supports and upholds our strong effort in K-8 to impart the importance and use of the classics in our mission to aid parents in forming their children. Families often present me with the question as to why classical literature is such a large component of our Catholic liberal education . My response usually consists of some of the following theories: 1) humans are hard-wired for stories that allow us to make sense of the world and understand our place in it 2) stories present different cultures and historical perspectives to the reader 3) quality books often contain thought-provoking situations or characters, thus cultivating wisdom and virtue 4) reading well written literature will have a pivotal role in a student’s ability to write 5) literature should support the mission of Catholic education and should not lead students toward sin or confusion about basic human goodness. As the ancient Roman writer Cicero once said, “Nothing is sweeter and more useful than the study of literature” as it has the ability to illuminate the truth about the human person. Thus, we are encouraging parents to read more of the classics themselves. In addition, we are asking school families to consider such titles within “The Thousand Good Books” list by John Senior. https://onlinegreatbooks.com/john-senior-and-the-thousand-good-books/ LIVING THE LITURGICAL YEAR In the Church, April is dedicated to the Eucharist and the Holy Spirit. Since our 2nd graders are preparing to receive the sacrament of First Holy Communion at the end of this month, we are focusing heavily on the Eucharist and its amazing ability to nourish and transform our students, families, and staff. Furthermore, for reading our newsletter this month, families have the opportunity to win two prizes -Bishop Barren’s book, Eucharist and a pop up Mass kit for their child. To enter into our drawing, email me the Latin word, EUCHARISTIA. WITNESS OF THE WEEK I would like to congratulate Elizabeth C from 1st grade for demonstrating the virtues of diligence and patience in her artwork. Elizabeth created the winning poster for this year’s KC Pro-life Poster Contest. Elizabeth’s masterpiece won first prize at the state level within her grade level bracket. Elizabeth will be awarded her medal and gift this coming week (pictures to come soon). Faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church, we form our students to be virtuous disciples of Jesus Christ and joyful witnesses to the Gospel. As you may know, the parish family hour on Wednesday nights is currently studying and
discussing the book, These Beautiful Bones (Emily Stimpson). Likewise, this has been the focus of our faculty book study most recently. We’ve been enjoying the book’s readability and comedic overtone that offers a synopsis on St. John Paul II’s, Theology of the Body (TOB). Often TOB is misinterpreted as simply being a masterpiece on the theology of sex. On the contrary, TOB offers a Catholic perspective on the true connection between body and soul in practical, everyday life. I’ve included some reviews in hope of sparking your interest in Stimpson’s work: “This is an accessible, practical, and winsome reflection on the implications of John Paul II's "theology of the body" for daily life. Brimming with wisdom, it is an invitation to a sacramental way of life.” “I love the premise of incorporating a body + soul unity in every aspect of our lives. She (Stimpson) makes so many great points about ordering our lives toward what matters, moving and living in our bodies (not just going from cubicle to couch), avoiding the pitfalls of the age of distraction, and so much more.” “I appreciated that her focus was less on the sexual aspect of the great Saint’s work and instead she emphasized what it means for our daily life: how we work, how we eat, how we dress, and how we pray.” I would highly encourage parents to attend the Wednesday night talks guided by Fr. Lappe and Deacon Jim, as their own perspectives immensely add to the topic. If you cannot attend the Wednesday night talks and would like to receive a free copy of the book, please email me. I believe you will find “These Beautiful Bones” to be quite entertaining and food for thought. Finally, in partnering with parents, our staff seeks to impart to children the proper way of viewing and using the body which has been gifted to each of us. WITNESS OF THE WEEK Sean D, in 7th grade, was nominated by a staff member for demonstrating the virtues of gratitude and courtesy. At a recent altar boy luncheon, Sean went out of his way to assist in cleaning up, and then shared deep appreciation for the event by thanking all those involved. Thank you, Sean, for your actions which led others to follow your example. CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION In Sister Mariana’s Kindergarten classroom, students are frequently presented with well-selected literature to facilitate great discussions. Ultimately, students are encouraged to identify virtuous and non-virtuous behaviors of characters. This is a common goal within our classical curriculum whether it be in a religion, literature or history course starting with the youngest of students. “How Full is Your Bucket?” and “The Selfish Giant” were just two stories in which students were asked to make the connection to virtue and to following Jesus. This past Thursday and Friday, our faculty participated in two full days of professional
development guided by the Institute for Catholic Liberal Education. With sincere gratitude to Dr. Merrill Roberts, who led our instruction, I am confident (on behalf of my staff) in stating that our time was well spent focusing on in-class practices that best serve your children. The training focused heavily on the benefits of teaching mimetically. Mimetic instruction guides students through the natural process of imitating an idea. We are mimetic creatures who learn by imitation. As an example, a good baseball coach teaches batting stance by modeling one to the player. Likewise, instead of talking about art, students should be given the opportunity to contemplate beautiful works and produce their own imitations. The same occurs within literature, science, and all disciplines. Additionally, the training emphasized preserving wonder, encouraging active inquiry, and fostering students' ability to discover truths versus just being fed facts. Dr. Roberts presently serves as science chair and middle school teacher at St. Jerome’s Academy in Maryland and also travels around the country assisting schools in adopting the Catholic liberal education philosophy. OLSOS emulates St. Jerome’s classical model due to its proven success over the last eleven years. LIVING THE LITURGICAL YEAR “Living the liturgical year” simply means celebrating those special days and feasts on our Church calendar. The month of March is full of liturgical feasts with two of the most well known being St. Patrick and St. Joseph’s Day. However, March 25th presents to us the wonderful Solemnity of the Annunciation in which the Archangel Gabriel announces the incarnation of Our Lord. This is often depicted in famous pieces of art. Hence, our giveaway this month for reading the newsletter is a 1000 piece puzzle of this representation. Please email the latin word, “ANNUNTIATIO” to enter our raffle. If unsure how to pronounce, ask your child this coming week. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS ● As of March 12th, Washington State’s mask mandate will expire. Faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church, we form our students to be virtuous disciples of Jesus Christ and joyful witnesses to the Gospel. Last week, I sent an email regarding the passing of our former bus driver and lunchroom
monitor, David Bauld. Now, I feel it is only fitting that I share the immense impact David had on our students during his time at Star. He spent much of his workday genuinely dedicated toward the formation of our students. His intentional interaction with students (and even staff) left each knowing that he deeply cared for them and their relationship with the Lord. We are grateful for the Bauld family for sharing this incredible man with us. As we near First Communion, Easter, high school graduations, and even summer weddings, I would like to encourage parents to utilize the School Religious Gift Store when looking for special gifts. Mr. and Mrs. Shurtz (Star parents) have recently ordered a variety of items for the liturgical seasons and life’s special events. The Religious Gift Store enables you to view products in person versus ordering online. Cards and gift bags are also available making your shopping experience just a bit easier. Furthermore, the goal of the gift store is not to make money, but rather the store offers a means for both school and parish families to evangelize through purchasing religious items. The store is located in Camerman Hall and is open each Sunday after the 8 and 11 am Masses. CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION In Mr. Gill's 5th, 6th, & 8th grade math classes, students are given the wonderful opportunity for one-on-one instruction once a week. Not only does Mr. Gill present the varying Math disciplines with great enthusiasm, but he’s helping students to discover their individual gifts for mathematics. So often students reference math stating “it’s irrelevant to real life, so why learn” or “I’m just not good at math.” Mr. Gill is changing the mindset of many students by encouraging them to discover the truths about mathematical concepts and it’s true application in life rather than just presenting a process to follow. This teaching method has proven to be an effective way to facilitate student learning. WITNESSES OF THE WEEK Benjamin R was nominated for demonstrating cheerfulness upon arrival at school this week. Although “Temperance” is the virtue focused on this month, Benjamin’s effort to start the day off with intentional positivity was a great example to his peers. Faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church, we form our students to be virtuous disciples of Jesus Christ and joyful witnesses to the Gospel. Ash Wednesday and Lent are just a few days away!!! Sometimes, my gut reaction to this reality is not met with enthusiasm, but rather, “Is it really that time again?” For some, this may be normal and compounded with the fear of failure to partake whole heartedly or to be successful with one’s Lenten commitments. Like myself, you may even experience slight stress toward Lenten practices, or as some say, Lenten resolutions. I believe it’s reasonable to experience this but shouldn’t stop us individually or as a family from embarking on the 40 day journey in the desert as our Lord did. As we all know, our own spiritual growth and that of our children should always be at the forefront of our desires. Hence, it is through sacrifice, repentance and reflection that we open ourselves up to what God can do for us through this season.
One of my favorite Catholic mom bloggers (Catholic Icing) pleads her case for us Catholics to hold off Easter celebrations until Lent is totally over. Although we wait a whole 40 days to celebrate Easter, the Easter season itself lasts 50 days with us being encouraged to celebrate with parties, events, crafts, and more. This site may be a helpful resource for families to reference for activities during Lent and Easter. CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION Mrs. Kilmer’s fourth grade, as an extension of their integrated literature and history studies, created log cabins using only items found in nature. Students paired up to replicate models of such cabins that were typical in Maine during the mi-late 1700’s. WITNESSES OF THE WEEK Cameron Q demonstrated the virtue of cheerfulness as I personally witnessed her deep pleasure in sharing her school and years of experiences with prospective families during Thursday’s Open House. In addition, we thank the other student council officers and students who likewise revealed their admiration for their teachers, curriculum and above all, their faith. These individuals along with other parish confirmands, have been preparing for this amazing day since September. Our own Dr. Clemen has assisted in this preparation as an instructor and long time supporter of our confirmation program. May the Holy Spirit enter the open hearts of the following students: AJ Cunningham, Joey Girard, Geoffrey James, Ben Keller, Jacobe Lacquiao-Lau, Jonah Pantig, James Pizanti, Sophia Powell, Cameron Quebral, Gwyn Rivaldi, Molly Shurtz, Williams Wolfgruber. Congratulations to the Pugh family (Emilia-5th/Brenna-2nd) for being the winner of our February basket of items centered around the Holy Spirit. Thanks for reading the newsletter! CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION First Graders not only discovered and learned about the solar system but also focused on the Ancient Greek solar system, comparing both Latin and Greek names of the planets. Just next door, Second Graders completed a novel immersed in the Roman Years which lead to a procession through the halls with crucifixes, rosaries, instruments and artwork in hand. This was customary of a true Christian "Triumph" after victory. WITNESS OF THE WEEK In 5th grade Patrick L. was nominated for demonstrating "cheerfulness" while in literature class. As the class carried on a Socratic style discussion regarding their present novel study, Patrick's enthusiasm to share his perceptions and knowledge of details was impressive. This led others to be just as engaged. Thank you, Patrick. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS

Our classical training nourishes the students' natural sense of wonder and guides them to know and love what is genuinely good, true, and beautiful. Faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church, we form our students to be virtuous disciples of Jesus Christ and joyful witnesses to the Gospel. As a tradition, the Church designates a theme each month for us to reflect more deeply on
and discover its significance. The month of February is dedicated to the Holy Family. Why is this worth mentioning? As we seek to attain holiness within our own state of life (vocation to family), we have an opportunity to relate to the simplicity that Jesus, Mary and Joseph lived out through laboring, resting, and worshipping together. St. Josemaria Escriva, founder of Opus Dei, often mentioned the sanctifying value of ordinary life as he stated: “Of Jesus’ thirty-three years, thirty were spent in silence, obscurity, submission and work.” Calling on the intercession of the Holy Family when in prayer, can grant us strength in tackling daily trials and ultimately, forge a beautiful relationship. After reading this newsletter, please send me the response “Sancta Familia” to enter your name for a drawing to win a basket of items centered around the Holy Family. To encourage our Latin program at home, families could frequently reference the Holy Family in this manner. CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION Within our PreK-4 program, Kim Bennett (Ms. Kim) incorporated the use of scales as students discovered the concept of more and less through weighing various items. Ms. Kim provides math skills found within our newly acquired Singapore Math curriculum that is proving to be a success in PreK-4 through Grade 4. WITNESSES OF THE WEEK Pitias T was nominated by our cafeteria staff for demonstrating cheerfulness (February’s virtue in practice) while communicating with peers and adults. This cheerfulness along with self-control was noted as it led others to copy his wonderful example. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS

Faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church, we form our students to be virtuous disciples of Jesus Christ and joyful witnesses to the Gospel. We are grateful to Kirk and Casey Martin for their presentations, Celebrate Calm, this past Friday. Star
students were given a wonderful opportunity to hear Casey’s message on how their responses and behaviors are interpreted and how best to relate to parents and teachers. Later, staff was provided with professional development themselves on dealing with challenging behaviors and best practices to optimize given situations. Kirk’s ability to present the difficult reality of raising children along with his humor, makes his message quite pleasurable and rewarding. I would strongly encourage families to purchase his talks at the special rate being offered. Once again, his talks provide practical steps for many typical challenges experienced by parents who sincerely seek an alternative to frustration and yelling. In Celebrating our Nation (last Tuesday), eighth graders presented beloved American saints while touring all the classrooms - demonstrating their ability to research, write well written speeches and then execute them multiple times.
