.In the hopes of stirring up excitement and anticipation for the SCOPE Auction, join us March 19th for a fun evening of food, prizes, and TRIVIA. This event is being hosted by our School Commission. Please encourage friends and family to attend (see attached flyer).
I would like to invite all school families to pray for our Star students receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation this Sunday. These individuals along with other parish confirmands, have been preparing for this amazing day since September. Our own Dr. Clemen has assisted in this preparation as an instructor and long time supporter of our confirmation program. May the Holy Spirit enter the open hearts of the following students: AJ Cunningham, Joey Girard, Geoffrey James, Ben Keller, Jacobe Lacquiao-Lau, Jonah Pantig, James Pizanti, Sophia Powell, Cameron Quebral, Gwyn Rivaldi, Molly Shurtz, Williams Wolfgruber. Congratulations to the Pugh family (Emilia-5th/Brenna-2nd) for being the winner of our February basket of items centered around the Holy Spirit. Thanks for reading the newsletter! CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION First Graders not only discovered and learned about the solar system but also focused on the Ancient Greek solar system, comparing both Latin and Greek names of the planets. Just next door, Second Graders completed a novel immersed in the Roman Years which lead to a procession through the halls with crucifixes, rosaries, instruments and artwork in hand. This was customary of a true Christian "Triumph" after victory. WITNESS OF THE WEEK In 5th grade Patrick L. was nominated for demonstrating "cheerfulness" while in literature class. As the class carried on a Socratic style discussion regarding their present novel study, Patrick's enthusiasm to share his perceptions and knowledge of details was impressive. This led others to be just as engaged. Thank you, Patrick. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS

Our classical training nourishes the students' natural sense of wonder and guides them to know and love what is genuinely good, true, and beautiful. Faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church, we form our students to be virtuous disciples of Jesus Christ and joyful witnesses to the Gospel. As a tradition, the Church designates a theme each month for us to reflect more deeply on
and discover its significance. The month of February is dedicated to the Holy Family. Why is this worth mentioning? As we seek to attain holiness within our own state of life (vocation to family), we have an opportunity to relate to the simplicity that Jesus, Mary and Joseph lived out through laboring, resting, and worshipping together. St. Josemaria Escriva, founder of Opus Dei, often mentioned the sanctifying value of ordinary life as he stated: “Of Jesus’ thirty-three years, thirty were spent in silence, obscurity, submission and work.” Calling on the intercession of the Holy Family when in prayer, can grant us strength in tackling daily trials and ultimately, forge a beautiful relationship. After reading this newsletter, please send me the response “Sancta Familia” to enter your name for a drawing to win a basket of items centered around the Holy Family. To encourage our Latin program at home, families could frequently reference the Holy Family in this manner. CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION Within our PreK-4 program, Kim Bennett (Ms. Kim) incorporated the use of scales as students discovered the concept of more and less through weighing various items. Ms. Kim provides math skills found within our newly acquired Singapore Math curriculum that is proving to be a success in PreK-4 through Grade 4. WITNESSES OF THE WEEK Pitias T was nominated by our cafeteria staff for demonstrating cheerfulness (February’s virtue in practice) while communicating with peers and adults. This cheerfulness along with self-control was noted as it led others to copy his wonderful example. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS

Faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church, we form our students to be virtuous disciples of Jesus Christ and joyful witnesses to the Gospel. We are grateful to Kirk and Casey Martin for their presentations, Celebrate Calm, this past Friday. Star
students were given a wonderful opportunity to hear Casey’s message on how their responses and behaviors are interpreted and how best to relate to parents and teachers. Later, staff was provided with professional development themselves on dealing with challenging behaviors and best practices to optimize given situations. Kirk’s ability to present the difficult reality of raising children along with his humor, makes his message quite pleasurable and rewarding. I would strongly encourage families to purchase his talks at the special rate being offered. Once again, his talks provide practical steps for many typical challenges experienced by parents who sincerely seek an alternative to frustration and yelling. Faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church, we form our students to be virtuous disciples of Jesus Christ and joyful witnesses to the Gospel. Our long-time tradition of celebrating Catholic Schools Week with daily planned events makes for a
memorable week for both students and staff. Among the many events, students are given two opportunities for service within our own community. While Grades K-2 will be making colorful placemats for Mary’s Place guests, grades 3-4 will make cards for local nursing home residents. Furthermore, due to a generous donor, middle schoolers will be putting essential items in draw string bags for all guests at Mary’s Place to receive upon arrival. During these cold months, these items should be needed and appreciated. In addition, we will hold our annual, “Fill the Bus” food drive all week long as we aim to re-stock the shelves at St. Vincent de Paul. Please join us as classes compete to bring in the most items (see attached flyer). Many of our 7th and 8th graders preparing to receive the sacrament of confirmation are on retreat this weekend. Please join our staff in praying for these young individuals to be open to the Holy Spirit now and on their special upcoming day this February 20th. CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION Sr. Maria Caeli’s 6th grade history class performed skits based on their favorite stories from Greek mythology. In 8th grade history, discussion was held on Shay’s Rebellion and the pros/cons of small, centralized government. Faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church, we form our students to be virtuous disciples of Jesus Christ and joyful witnesses to the Gospel. As many of you already know, the 22nd of January is known as the “Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”. I invite you to join our school community in observing this day with an extra prayer or more for the safety of all children especially within the womb. Being Saturday, one could say the Joyful Mysteries using the suggested USCCB Pro-Life rosary intentions provided below before each decade.
The Annunciation: For parents facing an unexpected pregnancy, that they lovingly accept the precious life God has entrusted to their care. The Visitation: That the family and friends of expectant parents might reach out and support them as they prepare to meet their child face to face. The Nativity: That the love of the Blessed Mother and the Christ Child may be a source of strength for every expectant mother, especially mothers living in poverty, and that they both will be surrounded by joy and love. The Presentation: That fathers of young children will model St. Joseph in devoutly practicing their faith, so that they lead their children to God by their words and example. The Finding of Jesus in the Temple: For all children who have been lost and forgotten, that they may be led to a place where they are treasured, protected and loved. CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION In middle school science, Dr. Clemen has been instructing students to work with others, perform experiments safely, and write neat and clear reports. Eighth graders have been using pendulums to study the conservation of energy and transfer of energy between potential energy and kinetic energy. Seventh graders finished up a lesson on changing ecosystems and learned a new word – eutrophication. (Ask a 7th grader what that word means.) Finally, sixth graders modeled the inner planets and made solar systems that filled the room- scaling these models using math skills. All these skills will be invaluable in their future classrooms and possible careers. WITNESSES OF THE WEEK Lucy and Elizabeth Rosas Arenas demonstrated “fidelity” (January’s virtue) and love for Our Lord in the Eucharist. A staff member witnessed from a far their great reverence as they passed the school chapel, not only making the sign of cross but genuflecting and bowing their heads. Thank you, girls, for having such a strong belief in the Real Presence. Faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church, we form our students to be virtuous disciples of Jesus Christ and joyful witnesses to the Gospel. As we are now a couple of weeks into the New Year, I was reminded of the importance to stop and set 2022 yearly goals as a spouse, parent, daughter, employee, co-worker and above all a “child of God”. I found this personal reflection below as a practical way to check or gage one’s current state of holiness, and ultimately maximize one’s upcoming new year as a Christian.
Do I… Allow Jesus to be the most transformative person in my life? Invest quality time to personal prayer? Actively engage in the Church’s liturgical life. Have Christ-centered friendships that promote virtue and holiness? CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION In Mrs. LaFrance ‘s Third Grade class, students enhance their writing skills daily as they work in the schoolwide program, Institute for Excellence in Writing. Students focus on writing key word outlines, paragraph writing, drafting, revising and retelling. IEW over the last three years has heavily impacted our students’ language arts capabilities by additionally improving sentence structure and increased vocabulary. WITNESSES OF THE WEEK Matthew Roscoe demonstrated the virtue of the month by showing “fidelity” to Church teachings by seeking the truths of the sacraments and upholding the importance of them within the classroom. SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT Under the patronage of our Blessed Mother, the mission of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic School is to support parents in their role as the primary educators of their children. Faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church, we form our students to be virtuous disciples of Jesus Christ and joyful witnesses to the Gospel. In the past month, a few families have shared struggles stemming from the past COVID
shutdowns and the consequences upon their children, specifically with increased digital exposure to screens through video games or cell phones. The impact of increased screen time is presenting itself both within the home and the school setting. In my attempt to research the problem, I stumbled across an article that I’d like to share with you. I believe this piece reveals just how easily something so innocent, or enjoyable, can turn rather negative. We are all too aware of our current predicament, and are unsure what the long term effects may be emotionally, psychologically or physiologically on youth. As parents, we should always be vigilant in protecting our children and avoiding harm in all forms. Thank you for reading the following article. I pray that you may find a few takeaways for yourself as I did. Perhaps you may feel inspired to pass the article to someone in need of guidance. Finally, thank you - we are all on a faith journey within our families. https://www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org/hometown-health/speaking-of-health/are-video-gamesand-screens-another-addiction CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION Our newly added staff member, Ms. Herndon started her first week instructing K-2 graders in Music. Her natural love for music was very evident as she worked with the students this week. She will be teaching a variety of music styles from classical, liturgical, folk style and more. Within our classical curriculum, primary level children discover what the song is about, interesting facts about the instruments used, how they work together, interesting aspects about song structure, and why the composer wrote it. They will sing along too! Thanks, Ms. Herndon. WITNESSES OF THE WEEK In 6th grade, Trinity C was noted as demonstrating the virtue of the month, fidelity. She eagerly and accurately answered a question presented by Father Lappe at Friday’s School Mass. Our school vision desires to see all our students display their knowledge of the faith and understanding of the Gospel without hesitation, revealing their loyalty to Truth. The answer can be complicated so I thought that I would share my favorite Liturgical Christmas Cheat Sheet with dates and information to refresh one's memory. ~December 25 to January 1 (Octave of Christmas) the 8 days of Christmas that we feast and celebrate. ~January 1 -Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God (Holy Day of Obligation) Also the Feast of the Circumcision (Jesus’ circumcision and naming 8 days after His birth –Genesis 17:10-12). ~December 25 through January 5 –“Twelve Days of Christmas” that lead up to Epiphany (because the date of Epiphany moves from year to year there are not always exactly 12 days). ~Twelfth Night –night before Epiphany. ~January 6 -Epiphany (or closest Sunday - Jan. 2, 2022) –Visit of the Magi to the Child Jesus ~Feast of the Baptism of the Lord (Sunday following the Epiphany - Jan. 9, 2022) ~The day after the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we return to ordinary time – green ~February 2 -Presentation of the Lord, also referred to as Candlemas, is about Mary’s presentation in the temple for Purification. PLEASE JOIN US FOR OLSOS ADVENT MISSION THIS MONDAY! A parish mission is a time of grace for individuals and the whole community. In addition to preaching, its core elements are reconciliation, fellowship, prayer, Scripture, and healing of relationships (who doesn’t need this?) St. Pope John Paul II called parish missions “necessary and urgent today,” and referenced that, “There is nothing which will replace the parish mission in the periodic and vigorous renewal of Christian life.” Renewal of Christian life is an apparent need in our culture even amongst us Catholics, and a large factor behind our classical transition in education. JOIN US MONDAY-WEDNESDAY 6:30-8:00 PM. REMINDER, THAT THE TIME SPENT PARTICIPATING COUNTS AS VOLUNTEER HOURS.
THIS WAS A WEEK FULL OF THANKSGIVING for the many hours that volunteers gave of themselves for the good of our students. Thanks to Ruth Rivaldi and all her many parent/grandparent volunteers who shopped, labeled, wrapped and organized our ADVENT STORE. It is a joy to see children eager and excited to purchase gifts for family members rather than focus on their own desires. Also, this week, students participated in our yearly FAITH RALLY. This event was a huge success! Students participated in the Catholic practice of prayers and songs within Exposition, as well as silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Our 8th grade class presented testimonials, prayed alongside younger students, and assisted with crafts centered around the day. The event concluded with a lively and talented concert praising Our Lord. Sister Maria Caeli and her parish/parent volunteers put in long hours to provide this memorable experience for our students and families. Thank you ALL! IMPORTANT REMINDERS
UPCOMING DAY Dec. 13- Report Cards sent home Dec.13-15 Parish Advent Mission Dec. 17- Christmas Break Starts Jan. 3- School Resumes CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION Sister Mariana’s Kindergarten classroom integrated their nature study of birds into their acquisition of language arts. Besides learning to recite the poem, The Blackbirds, they came to identify and familiarize themselves with nouns, verbs and adjectives. Who said Kindergarteners can’t learn parts of speech? WITNESS OF THE WEEK Two Second Graders were acknowledged for Patience this past week. Nicholas English continued to be attentive during Mass when distractions were present. Vivian Le, likewise, demonstrated Patience by utilizing class time wisely while waiting for assistance and materials to be distributed. Congratulations to all our Second Graders who made their First Reconciliation on Saturday. I also want to congratulate in advance the ones who will be making this sacrament within the next couple of Saturdays. May you always value and practice this gift from God to experience His love and mercy.
Advent is here! A former student of OLSOS wrote an Advent poem a few years back, which I still find special. Since our classical model integrates poetry within all subjects, I find it fitting to share this work to inspire our present families and students to dive into the practice of reading and writing poetry. In addition, I have a challenge for any of our students to memorize and recite a portion of this poem to their teacher or myself as this would bring us such joy. Come again in a spiritual way Remind us of that holy day When you took on flesh and came into the world When you were born of Mary, a beautiful girl. You came not in splendor, glory, or might But was born a baby on a dark, silent night But Mary and Joseph knew who you were Likewise, the kings who brought you gold, frankincense, and myrrh. You slept among the animals you created And lay on the hay as you patiently waited For the moment when you would save the earth Which was foretold long before your birth. Help us to see what the shepherds saw As they bent their knees and stared in awe At a little child who cried, “I thirst!” For the salvation of souls, not to be nursed. Come again on Christmas day Prepare our hearts as we prepare the way For you, whom the Father sent. God, I pray you bless our Advent -Anonymous IMPORTANT REMINDERS

She incorporates clever games and strength building to enhance the full formation of the student. She aims to instruct her students that glorifying God is also done through taking care of their bodies. A wonderful explanation of our theory on physical education is presented below. https://www.hillsdale.edu/hillsdale-blog/k12-classical-education/mind-and-body-why-physical-education-needs-to-be-an-essential-feature-of-classical-education/ WITNESS OF THE WEEK In 7th Grade, Jonah Pantig was noted as the witness of the week. As his class was moving along swiftly, he stopped and waited (demonstrating the virtue of patience) to greet and converse with a teacher who was presently busy. His manners and cordial nature were exemplary. |
