PRAISE GOD! We are so grateful for the wonderful news of the overturning of Roe vs. Wade in June. Thanks to all our students and families who have diligently prayed for this ruling to come into existence. Furthermore, thanks to all our students in grades 5-8 who wore their LIFE Runners t-shirts this past year on the first Wednesday of each month to support a culture of life. DAILY SCHEDULE Please be prepared for a slight alteration to our start and release time. The schedule will likely be changed to best fit our current academic goals. Please note that Fridays will be a full day this upcoming year. NEW BUS STOP We are pleased to announce that both our buses will be running this upcoming year. Two buses allow for all students to be on the bus less each day. The south bound bus will now include a pickup/drop off service at the Mullenix Park & Ride. Additionally, the north bound bus in Poulsbo will also have a new pick-up/drop off location at the North Viking Park & Ride. Times and exact location within each lot will be announced in August. Register at youth.starofthesea.net/fraternus--fidelis I would like to share my deepest gratitude to Star parents for supporting the school staff and overall mission. Teachers have enjoyed implementing the classical liberal arts education alongside parents who seek to understand and invest themselves in their child’s education. We look forward to our second year of adopting additional practices that will further suit each child’s developmental stage of learning. Please pray for our teachers as they will continue their professional development in the liberal arts philosophy through their attendance at the ICLE’s National Conference this July at Catholic University (Maryland). Finally, I pray that you will have a wonderful and safe summer!!!

Perhaps some families will have a greater opportunity to engage in more family-oriented activities and/or acquire new ones. Many folks travel during summer, but when not away there is often a chance for greater family bonding. Here are just a few suggestions of family activities: ● Cook a new recipe ● Plant a garden or pots ● Learn to play a new sport ● Build puzzles ● Read as a family (Aesop’s Fables is always a winner) ● Study our local geography through maps ● Perform a mini theatrical play ● Workout or hike together ● Learn a new chore and/or clean out closets ● Learn a new prayer or psalm together ● Watch Catholic saint movies on Formed https://formed.org/ ● Celebrate feast days with a special dessert (see feasts listed below) AWARDS FOR THE YEAR Congratulations to students who were presented awards for the 2021/22 school year on Friday. In order to best prepare parents for next year’s volunteer opportunities, a thorough list of activities has been given -allowing families to familiarize themselves with the possibilities and pre-plan their ways of earning volunteer hours (see attached flyer). SUMMER READING REQUIREMENT Summer reading is critical for students to retain knowledge and skills learned in this past school year. Parents should consider promoting reading as just another form of activity during the summer months so that this becomes second nature. Teachers in grades 3-8 have provided a required book to be read by each student entering these grades before Aug. 30. Thank you for purchasing the book or finding it within your public library (see attached flyer). UNIFORMS An updated list of uniform items for the 2022/23 school year has been provided. Besides visiting Ideal Commercial Uniform in Bremerton, families can go online to order, email the office to purchase from our used closet, or wait for the New Parent Orientation on Aug. 21st (see attached flyer). SUMMER MONTH FEAST DAYS June 19 - Corpus Christi July 29 - St. Martha (give up all chores) July 31 - St. Ignatius August 4 - St. John Vianney August 6 - Transfiguration SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT Under the patronage of our Blessed Mother, the mission of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic School is to support parents in their role as the primary educators of their children. Our classical training nourishes the students’ natural sense of wonder and guides them to know and love what is genuinely good, true, and beautiful. Faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church, we form our students to be virtuous disciples of Jesus Christ and joyful witnesses to the Gospel. I would like to thank all the participants of “The Jungle Book'' for their long hours of commitment. I wish that our entire student body could have witnessed the amazing singing, dancing and acting by this talented group of about 30 students. However, over 120 chairs were filled with peers, families and friends last Saturday. The theatrical production company stressed how well engaged, behaved and positive our students were in comparison to other schools. I think this is worth noting and a good reminder as to why we send our children to a Catholic school where virtue and wisdom are a priority.
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT With just two weeks of school remaining, I must share that both Mrs. LaFrance (3rd) and Mrs. Bennett (preschool) will be leaving our faculty staff to embark on retirement. Combined, these two women have served children and families through education for almost four decades. Sharon has been an employee of Star for 20 years as well as an alumna– few people can say that. Likewise, Kim has served children, both at Star and in Kitsap County within early childhood education for over 16 years. We sincerely extend our gratitude for their service and pray for their next adventure in life. We will be blessed to still have them as part of our parish community. CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION This upcoming week, our teachers will attend an in-depth professional development on Theology of the Body (TOB). The TOB curriculum will be used in all grades as a supplemental resource to our current religion curriculum by Sophia Press. In an effort to help parents better understand the benefits of TOB, we invite you to join us Friday, June 3rd, at our First Friday Family Faith Formation. WITNESS OF THE WEEK Kelani C and Sean D were nominated by our office staff for demonstrating the virtue of courteousness when they took time to help a younger student who had dropped his belongings. They immediately assisted this student by collecting the items all over the stairs. We are grateful for students who are thoughtful of others throughout the day. Each school year, we follow the Virtues in Practice Program provided by St. Cecilia’s Congregation. As your students know, nine different virtues have been presented and emphasized throughout this school year. Please attempt to discuss and practice the past nine virtues during the summer months as much as possible: Hope, Studiousness, Humility, Patience, Fidelity, Cheerfulness, Temperance, Obedience, and Diligence. This week, we will start our Spring MAP Testing in the following three disciplines: reading, math and language arts. Students will take one growth assessment each morning with Thursday/Friday as additional days for those who were absent or in need of more time to finish. Please ensure that your child receives adequate sleep and good nutrition each morning as always, but especially this week. Also, encourage your child to put forth their best effort so as to truly reflect their academic growth through our new modes of teaching and prior knowledge.
MAY’S GIVE AWAY -WINNER!!! May’s giveaway of a beautiful garden statue of Our Lady was won by the Garcia family. Congratulations! Thanks to all who responded last week by reading the newsletter and submitting, “Ave Maria”. CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION Mrs. Bennett’s preschool 4 class painted red eggs after reading the story of St. Mary Magdalene. The reason for this is stated below: According to tradition, Saint Mary Magdalene, who had patrician rank, gained an audience in Rome with the emperor after the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ. She denounced Pilate for his handling of Jesus' trial and then began to talk with Caesar about Jesus' resurrection. She picked up a hen's egg from the dinner table to illustrate her point about resurrection. Caesar was unmoved and replied that there was as much chance of a human being returning to life as there was for the egg to turn red. Immediately, the egg miraculously turned red in her hand! It is because of this tradition that Orthodox Christians exchange red eggs at Easter. WITNESS OF THE WEEK Nicholas E (2nd grade) demonstrated May’s virtue of “diligence” when he taught himself to write with his left hand due to a right hand injury. He completed all assignments without any complaining and kept a joyful disposition. Timothy H (1st grade) demonstrated the virtue of “kindness”when he encouraged a classmate to join him at a recess game rather than sit alone. WHAT’S NEW! It’s official- the S.C.O.P.E. Auction was a wonderful success due to the dedication of several individuals working behind the scenes and through the generosity of so many donors!
As it stands now, we raised $306,000! The total is more than any previous auction. The most exciting news is the Fund-an-Item goal was reached and the plan to replace the flooring on all three levels is now in motion. As many have noted, the physical transformation of our building is apparent. The new flooring ties into our effort to provide a home-like environment which allows for a cozier learning experience. Our entire staff, Fr. Lappe, and the school commission would like to extend our deepest appreciation to Solenne Santiago for once again providing clever and entertaining videos to enhance our auction. MAY’S GIVE AWAY As the month of May is dedicated to Mary, we are giving away a beautiful garden statue of Our Lady. To enter your name, email me “Ave Maria”. May we all grow in greater understanding of Mary’s role in our lives and need to invoke her intercession daily. CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION In Mrs. Kilgallen’s 5th grade science class, a hands-on project involved building rubber band cars. This scientific experiment centered around demonstrating kinetic and potential energy by using plastic cups, straws, and rubberbands. Students were better equipped to understand the concept of storing and releasing energy through visual observation rather than just reading about it. FOOD FOR THOUGHT A recent quote within “The Loop” nicely sums up our reasons to move toward a liberal arts philosophy and is worth sharing: If you remove the bacon, lettuce, and tomato you can’t call it a BLT. Likewise if you remove civics, logic, grammar, rhetoric, penmanship, classical languages, religion, and philosophy, you can’t call it education. But this is exactly what mainstream education has done. -Jeremy Wayne Tate WITNESS OF THE WEEK Within a classical liberal arts philosophy, attention to detail specifically in writing is heavily encouraged across all disciplines. This past week in 5th grade , Gabe M demonstrated our virtue of the month, diligence, as he turned in quality works of writing requiring fine tuning his essays for success. His effort was noted and appreciated by his instructors. WHAT’S NEW! We are excited to share that our school App is now live and available for use. Offering students a chance to explore the performing arts has been an additional goal for us this year. As many already know, theater allows students to explore classical characters and storylines with the aim of bringing them to life on stage. Students come to see literature, not just as words on a page, but living characters. As actors, students are challenged to step out of their comfort zones and into the shoes of another. Thus, they learn the concepts of stage presence, physical movement, voice control, character development, rehearsal techniques (including improvisation), self-discipline, teamwork/collaboration and have the opportunity to build t heir confidence.
We are pleased to offer our students in grades 4-8 the opportunity to partake in an eight day theatrical performance starting on Thursday, May 12. Students will audition, be assigned roles, practice daily and conclude with an afternoon show on Saturday, May 21st. This year’s production is being provided by a local Catholic company whose selected performance coincides with our 5th grade’s literature study of The Jungle Book. Please encourage your child to participate as I believe they will benefit immensely from this experience (see attached flyer). CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION In preparation for First Communion, the second-grade studied the positive and negative space in Eucharistic art. The children discovered that they could create a chalice using their profile. The students cut out their profiles revealing a chalice. When placed on a black background, the students saw themselves in the negative space looking at the chalice on both sides. They completed their projects with a reflection on adoring the Lord in the Holy Eucharist. UPCOMING CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION TO VIEW Please join our first annual Recitation Afternoon this Thursday, May5th @ 2:00 pm in Camerman Hall. Grades K-8 will demonstrate their recitation skills by presenting several pieces of work whether it be poetry, historical documents or song. We are excited for our students to have a forum to display the fruits of their hard work and commitment to their current studies in Literature, Religion, History and Latin (see attached flyer). Faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church, we form our students to be virtuous disciples of Jesus Christ and joyful witnesses to the Gospel. As the Easter break has allowed many of us to re-energize in order to push through the next
seven weeks of school, I sincerely ask families to support our upcoming auction just two weeks away. As most know, we depend heavily on our auction as our main fundraiser rather than doing multiple smaller scaled ones throughout the year. Please consider attending this year’s in-person auction and buying your tickets as soon as possible. Your participation promotes our school's newly acquired mission towards a classical liberal education. This philosophy of education not only develops and increases a child’s intellect, moral, and physical capacity, but also encourages families toward a greater communal bond to ultimately transform the current culture. We desire our families to build strong, lasting relationships for years to come. So please join in the excitement, meet new families, invite friends and family, and relish in Catholic fellowship!!! CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION In 5th grade literature, students participated in several lessons revolving around a variety of classical short stories. The purpose of such stories and within any good piece of literature is to seek answers to some basic human questions. Students have learned how to question a story and be questioned by it. Some of the recent short stories read and discussed were “The Hungry Coat” by Demi,“Zlateh the Goat” by Singer, and “The Fun They Had” by Asimov. This week they will start the novel The Good Master by Seredy and will reflect and memorize the poem “In Flanders Field'' by McCrae. The insightfulness demonstrated by these 5th graders is admirable. You likely already have plans for making this upcoming week extra special
for you and your family. In case you're looking for some ideas, here is a list to help make Holy Week a time of quiet reflection upon the most important event in the history of the world: 1. Observe Palm Sunday with Fervor 2. Listen To Holy Week Music- Sacred or classical in nature 3. Read Your Way Through Holy Week -Fr. Lappe has suggested many books and podcasts over the years and perhaps this would be the week to dive into one of these sources 4. Attend The Other Services Of Holy Week- Holy Week is framed by Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, but what happens between is what makes the two Sundays make sense - please check the parish bulletin online or “upcoming dates” below for these services 5. Get to Confession- In reference to this sacrament: “It would, therefore, be foolish, as well as presumptuous, to wish arbitrarily to disregard the means of grace and salvation which the Lord has provided and, in the specific case, to claim to receive forgiveness while doing without the sacrament which was instituted by Christ precisely for forgiveness”- St. John Paul II 6. Take Part In A Mini-Fast- Consider a full or modified fast starting from the conclusion of Good Friday worship through sundown on Saturday 7. I’d like to thank Sr. Jane Dominic for sharing her great knowledge and wisdom regarding the
importance of sound, classical literature at First Friday’s Family Formation Night. Sister’s presentation completely supports and upholds our strong effort in K-8 to impart the importance and use of the classics in our mission to aid parents in forming their children. Families often present me with the question as to why classical literature is such a large component of our Catholic liberal education . My response usually consists of some of the following theories: 1) humans are hard-wired for stories that allow us to make sense of the world and understand our place in it 2) stories present different cultures and historical perspectives to the reader 3) quality books often contain thought-provoking situations or characters, thus cultivating wisdom and virtue 4) reading well written literature will have a pivotal role in a student’s ability to write 5) literature should support the mission of Catholic education and should not lead students toward sin or confusion about basic human goodness. As the ancient Roman writer Cicero once said, “Nothing is sweeter and more useful than the study of literature” as it has the ability to illuminate the truth about the human person. Thus, we are encouraging parents to read more of the classics themselves. In addition, we are asking school families to consider such titles within “The Thousand Good Books” list by John Senior. https://onlinegreatbooks.com/john-senior-and-the-thousand-good-books/ LIVING THE LITURGICAL YEAR In the Church, April is dedicated to the Eucharist and the Holy Spirit. Since our 2nd graders are preparing to receive the sacrament of First Holy Communion at the end of this month, we are focusing heavily on the Eucharist and its amazing ability to nourish and transform our students, families, and staff. Furthermore, for reading our newsletter this month, families have the opportunity to win two prizes -Bishop Barren’s book, Eucharist and a pop up Mass kit for their child. To enter into our drawing, email me the Latin word, EUCHARISTIA. WITNESS OF THE WEEK I would like to congratulate Elizabeth C from 1st grade for demonstrating the virtues of diligence and patience in her artwork. Elizabeth created the winning poster for this year’s KC Pro-life Poster Contest. Elizabeth’s masterpiece won first prize at the state level within her grade level bracket. Faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church, we form our students to be virtuous disciples of Jesus Christ and joyful witnesses to the Gospel. As you may know, the parish family hour on Wednesday nights is currently studying and
discussing the book, These Beautiful Bones (Emily Stimpson). Likewise, this has been the focus of our faculty book study most recently. We’ve been enjoying the book’s readability and comedic overtone that offers a synopsis on St. John Paul II’s, Theology of the Body (TOB). Often TOB is misinterpreted as simply being a masterpiece on the theology of sex. On the contrary, TOB offers a Catholic perspective on the true connection between body and soul in practical, everyday life. I’ve included some reviews in hope of sparking your interest in Stimpson’s work: “This is an accessible, practical, and winsome reflection on the implications of John Paul II's "theology of the body" for daily life. Brimming with wisdom, it is an invitation to a sacramental way of life.” “I love the premise of incorporating a body + soul unity in every aspect of our lives. She (Stimpson) makes so many great points about ordering our lives toward what matters, moving and living in our bodies (not just going from cubicle to couch), avoiding the pitfalls of the age of distraction, and so much more.” “I appreciated that her focus was less on the sexual aspect of the great Saint’s work and instead she emphasized what it means for our daily life: how we work, how we eat, how we dress, and how we pray.” I would highly encourage parents to attend the Wednesday night talks guided by Fr. Lappe and Deacon Jim, as their own perspectives immensely add to the topic. If you cannot attend the Wednesday night talks and would like to receive a free copy of the book, please email me. I believe you will find “These Beautiful Bones” to be quite entertaining and food for thought. Finally, in partnering with parents, our staff seeks to impart to children the proper way of viewing and using the body which has been gifted to each of us. WITNESS OF THE WEEK Sean D, in 7th grade, was nominated by a staff member for demonstrating the virtues of gratitude and courtesy. At a recent altar boy luncheon, Sean went out of his way to assist in cleaning up, and then shared deep appreciation for the event by thanking all those involved. Thank you, Sean, for your actions which led others to follow your example. CATHOLIC LIBERAL EDUCATION IN ACTION In Sister Mariana’s Kindergarten classroom, students are frequently presented with well-selected literature to facilitate great discussions. Ultimately, students are encouraged to identify virtuous and non-virtuous behaviors of characters. This is a common goal within our classical curriculum whether it be in a religion, literature or history course starting with the youngest of students. “How Full is Your Bucket?” and “The Selfish Giant” were just two stories in which students were asked to make the connection to virtue and to following Jesus.
