Dear Star Parents and Families,
I hope this email finds you all safe and healthy!
This week steps were taken to strengthen the security of the school’s Google accounts/Chromebook internet access by employing a new program named Securly. This program allows the school to monitor what internet sites are being accessed by our students. Securly also has the ability to block inappropriate sites.
Since the start of the school’s online learning platform, we have become aware of certain holes in our online security that would allow students to access sites that are not education related. This revelation caused us to take a deeper examination of our students’ online activities which revealed some “off-task” usage. Please remind your students that the school Chromebooks and Google accounts (school.starofthesea.net) are to be used for school work only. Students should not be accessing gaming sites, social media sites or sites such as Youtube, unless directed by a teacher.
In addition to “off-task” usage, we have discovered that some students are using their devices late into the evening. We would like your help in minimizing screen time for your child. Students should not be online doing school work late into the evening. Please have your child sign out of their accounts and turn off their device at a reasonable hour in the early evening.
Unfortunately, we are not able to extend the school’s internet protection if your student is accessing their school Google account from a family owned computer. We are relying on you to provide the internet security for your children at home. There are programs available for use on your home devices such as Securly Home Version and GoGuardian. Please contact me if you would like more information about available programs for home internet safety.
I encourage you to take a look at our school’s Facebook and Instagram, as we have been posting daily challenges for our school community, along with pictures sent in by teachers, students and family members. Today we featured Camryn B, our longest attending 8th grade girl at Star who was given the honor of crowning Mary.
Plans for the end of the school year are currently being made. We will keep you informed as to when school equipment can be returned, as well as give you the opportunity to collect your student’s personal items from desks and lockers.
Thank you for your continued patience and understanding during online learning. We deeply appreciate all that you are doing to help us in the education of your children! Have a wonderful, restful and safe weekend.
Kevin Kealy, Principal
