Our Lady Star of the Sea School has a collection of over 9,000 books and receives the following periodicals: “National Geographic for Kids,”, “Kids Discover”, and “Zoobooks”.
Parent volunteers assist our librarian, Mrs. Kennedy. They help keep records up-to-date and assist with book check out and return and the processing of new books. To help manage the library, we use Follett library management software.
The library is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 am to the end of the school day. Classroom teachers are welcome to take their classes to the library to work on projects, take AR tests, or do research on Mondays and Fridays.
Students in grades kindergarten through grade five are scheduled to visit the library once a week. Older students (grades 6, 7 and 8) visit the library when they need to return or check out books, take AR tests or work on research.
Star’s library is supported by a line item in the school budget, donations, and proceeds from the annual Scholastic Book Fair.
Accelerated Reader
The Accelerated Reader is a program based on the premise that practice improves reading skills and comprehension. Through a computerized tracking system, Star students read at the correct level of difficulty and demonstrate their reading skills through specially designed tests. Points are given for correct answer and a cumulative total is provided at the end of each test. The Accelerated Reader program also includes an assessment component that provides teachers with diagnostic information about students’ reading levels and interests. Visit the AR Bookfinder website to help find AR books. You can also use Home Connect to track your students progress.
Star students in grades 3 – 8 are required to read books each trimester and pass tests on them. The reading requirement varies by grade. The Accelerated Reader program is part of the literature curriculum and is incorporated into the literature grade. View the suggested sixth grade reading list and seventh and eighth grade reading list.
What’s New in the Library
- We subscribe to Accelerated Reader Enterprise, which provides us with online access to all the AR quizzes. This has greatly opened up the number of quizzes that students can access
- As part of AR Enterprise the students and their parents can access the students’ AR records from home.
- We have labeled all our fiction and non-fiction books that have AR quizzes with labels so the students can tell immediately which books have quizzes, what reading level the books are, and how many points they are worth.
