Students are saints for a day

The Kitsap Sun newspaper spent a day at our school reporting on our third annual Living Saints Museum. Read the article:

The costumes extended past Halloween for Students at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic School.

Long after the pint-size ghouls and goblins had left the streets, students donned saint wear: robes, mitres and medallions. They marched from the church to the Catholic school on Tuesday in honor of All Saints Day.

Once there, the 154 students treated their families and church parishioners to the third annual “Living Saints Museum.” The students dressed up and played the part of their favorite saint for the interactive museum. Students from kindergarten through eighth grade participated.

There were a variety of saints, ranging from St. Louigi Scrosoppi — the patron saint of soccer players — to St. John Bosco — the patron saint of editors and youth.

“The kids really get into it,” said Ingrid Spencer, fourth-grade teacher.

Each student had about three weeks in the school’s computer lab and at home to research their selected saint.

Ian White, who dressed as St. Jude, said he learned a lot from the project.

“I learned that he cured a king of leprosy and that he was very close to Jesus.”

Conner McGraw chose to play St. Edmond. After explaining some details of his gruesome demise, he went on to re-enact his death, falling on the ground and gasping for air.

“He’s my favorite saint, I have two movies about him,” he said.

Some students relied on new technology to research an old topic. William Matney took on the role of St. Ignatius of Laconi, who lived in the 1700s. He said he was not very well-known.

But, “the Internet has a lot of stuff,” William said.

For some it was more than increasing their book knowledge. Madilyne Tomaszewski had to overcome her shyness when she delivered her mini-presentation.

“It was definitely a good thing,” said Kristy Tomaszewski, Madilyne’s mother.

Materials for the costumes came from Goodwill, costume shops or old Christmas tree skirts and table cloths.

“The parents did a lot,” said Kristen Walker, an eighth-grade teacher, who added that the museum drew about 500 visitors. “We are all very proud of our school and this is a great way to show it off.”

The costumes got double use. The church put on an All Saints Party on Monday — Halloween — as a safe alternative to trick-or-treating.

“It’s better for us to have students dress up as saints, instead of demons and devils,” said Father Derek Lappe, Our Lady Star of the Sea pastor.

Kitsap Sun: New principal sees move to parochial school as a blessing

Our new school principal Jeannette Wolfe was recently written about in the Kitsap Sun! Read the article below:

Twenty minutes before the bell rang, the parking lot began to fill with uniformed students who posed while their parents took pictures.

Inside the staff lounge of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic School, Principal Jeannette Wolfe stood before a group of 10 teachers on their first school day together.

After 20 years working in public education, this was Wolfe’s first at a parochial school. It would start somewhat differently than all those before.

Wolfe handed out a sheet of paper titled “Blessings for the Beginning of School.” She and the teachers alternated reciting the printed prayers asking for strength, wonder, compassion.

Then Wolfe bowed her head and added, “I would ask that you bless each of these teachers.” [Read more...]

Press Release: Our Lady Star of the Sea Seeks Grants

Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic School actively seeks grant opportunities and private, corporate, or organizational gifts to continue the goals of excellence in learning and fostering a healthy learning environment.

“We are very proud of the record of academic achievement by our students. Despite the economic times, we strive to maintain high standards. Grants and gifts that are a good fit will help open doors for even higher levels of learning and enrichment. Those with an emphasis on the arts and sciences would be particularly valuable,” noted Jeannette Wolfe, school principal. “We also seek to upgrade our school lunch program to include healthier choices, and bolster the physical education and athletic program for all students.”

While a grant/gift search and response process is underway by a school volunteer committee, Ms. Wolfe asks parents, grandparents, parishioners and others in the community to share their awareness of prospects that may be available through their work or associations. Local community groups are encouraged to consider Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic School students as beneficiaries of suitable programs and activities.

Ms. Wolfe begins her first year as principal of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic School and cites the new full- time preschool that also begins this year. “This is an exciting time for us. I look forward to meeting all the students and supporting the teaching staff and classroom activities. Grant opportunities that provide for staff development will also be given serious consideration.”
